ABC did a special on "20/20" describing the conditions
of Romanian orphans in desperate straits, many of
them dying from terminal diseases. After the program,
over 25,000 people wrote to ABC expressing a wish to
adopt these children. Today there are 100 approved
families waiting to adopt babies with Downs Syndrome.
And yet, in recent years, several made-for-television
movies have put down the adoption option, painting
adoption as a way that middle-class couples victimize
poor young mothers. I just keep thinking about
Edmond Burke declaring that "the only thing necessary
for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing."
"Feminists," according to Rosalyne Bush, editor of
Family Voice,
"vehemently oppose adoption, declaring
that it will destroy women and destroy the institution
of the single mother." And just what is the so-called
"institution of the single mother?" According to Bush,
"These mothers seldom finish their education or land
a job. As a result, 60 percent of the children raised by
young single mothers end up on welfare rolls" which
becomes a self-perpetuating lifestyle.
