Some people may feel that your efforts here at

Christian Homes don't add up. But, without a doubt,

you have successfully subtracted more than 1,000

potential ·casualties fro'm the total, for sure. And now

down the road there is a bonus we never even thought

about in 1970. Grandchildren!

Christian Homes President Nancy Miller used to

remind us to not make our children feel too "special."

She told us the story about the child on the playground

asking others, "Are you adopted?" "No." -- "Oh, too

bad." When ours did excel, especially athletically,

people would ask, "Did they get that from you?" "No,"

I'd say, "it just runs in the family" -- or "No, that's why

we adopted."

Of course, the first question people always ask is

"Do they know they're adopted?" Sure! They'll never

remember a time when they didn't know. That's the

key. You've got to be truthful. We told them, early

and often, that we found them in a big, family-size box

of "Cheer." I mean, why lie to them. Never

underestimate the value of delivering a message of

truth on the wings of humor. Ah, kinship.

High school was an exciting time for us. Our

daughter learned the "goods" and "bads" of being

Treasurer for a couple of organizations. Our son, a

superb quarter miler, helped set a school record in the

mile relay at the state track meet and was a true

gladiator as a defensive end in football.

Now, you ask, were there ever times, however brief,

that we felt like "wringing their necks?" Sure. Did we
