Challenging circumstances develop character and encourage spirituality At Harding there are many people who have limitations. Learning how to deal with these limitations may be oneofthe most difficult challenges students face. Sophomore Lisa Metzer has had insulin dependent diabetes for 10 years. "It has become a way of life," she said. Me.tzer used to control her diabetes with three insulin shots a day, but the summer before her freshman year at Harding, she got an insulin pump. This pump allows her schedule to be more flexible. Metzer is always aware of her condition, but it does not decrease her faith in God. "Through everything God has taken care of me," she said. "God will not give me something I can't handle. He has prepared me to deal with this. He has givenmeagreatroommate, friends and family to encourage me when I do get frustrated. " Metzer said God reminds her daily that He molded her and will help her throughout her life. "Struggles build endurance and perseverance," Metzer said. "They also help us to become more like Jesus. Struggles help us to rely on God more." Sophomore Becky Sharp considers her limitation a blessing. Sharp was born with cerebral palsy. "My limitation has helped me because I know you don't have to go by society's standards," Sharp said. "Trust in the Lord and he will help you." Sharp's perspective on life is also different from others. Despite her limitation, she is still able and willing to serve God. "God didn't give me this limitation to punish me, but to show others that I can still spread His word," Sharp said. A verse that inspires Sharp is Phillipians 4:13, "I can do all things in Christ, who gives me strength." Her faith has grown during the trying times in her life. Sharp realizes her limitation is a gift from God, and she is a stronger person because of her faith. - Jody Knight Praises to God come from sophomore lisa Metzer as she sings in chapel.
