Preaching the word: Bible majors gain experience through area congregations In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus told his disciples to go into the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything he commanded. Some students in the College of Bible and Religion are currently doing just that. Kent Jobe, a junior religious education major, preaches every Sunday morning at Spring Valley Church of Christ in Spring Valley, Ark. What started as a volunteer position at this small 10-member congregation has progressed into a weekly job. Because the congregation is so small, it has been open to many different ideas that Jobe has presented to the them. One of the more recent programs has centered on church growth. Since the 10 original members of the church are elderly and the remaining worshipers are Harding students, Jobe finds it a challenge to preach a message in which both groups will be interested. "The message has to be balanced so that it can relate to both the old and young," he said. Learning to work with the older members has been a positive experience for Jobe. Kevin Wells, a junior Bible major, also preaches every Sunday, at the Lead Hill Church of Christ, a small country church 150 miles from Searcy. Wells, like Jobe, believes his experience is Junior Kent Jobe visits with sophomore Jessica Henderson before preaching his Sunday sermon at the Spring Valley Church ofChrist. "Preaching every Sunday morning and evening and preparing these sermons has helped me to keep studying the Bible in away that is applicable to my life," he said. Even though this experience has been wonderful for Wells, he cautions other Bible majors whowant to preach regularly. "I have had to make a lot of sacrifices, such as not hanging out with my friends on Saturday evening because I need to prepare for the sermon I will give the next morning. It is a heavy responsibility, but it is a great way to learn and help people at the same time." Jobe encouraged students to "find something or some place to be involved," and "learn from it." - Christie Rogers Cindy Ducker - Judsonia, Ark. Jeremy Duncan - Fairhope, Ala.
