Gaining experience through internships is... TRAINING FOR TOMORROW Perhaps the best way to learn about something is to experience it for yourself. For many Harding students, internships provided a way to do just that. Many majors, such as radio/ television, graphic design and dietetics , require internships before graduation. The internships are viewed as an important part oflearning, and the "hands-on" training gives the intern invaluable job experience. Students may arrange their own, but the Cooperative Education office assists students in finding internships. Many are available during the school year, but most are offered in the summer. The Cooperative Education office makes sure that an income is provided for their students. This can cause problems since most companies offer unpaid internships to allow the student to get on-thejob experience without cost to the organization. All internships taken through the Cooperative Education office are taken for one to six hours of credit. Interns must write papers on their work which summarize their experience and evaluate its benefits. Valerie McCammon, a senior chemistry major, worked as a co-op intern last summer at the Environmental Certification Labs in Farmersburg, Ind. She said, "A lot of people don't get a chance to work in their major before graduation, " she said, "yet the employers want experienced workers. I'm certain that this experience will help me get a job. " - Lisa Stiles Graduate student Stacie Evans finishes a task in Hardings Public Relations Office.
