With the help of practicum students and Dr. Lou Butterfield, KHCA's directors ignited a flame of enthusiasm in the radio station this year. "The goal for this year was simple in concept ," station manager Melanie Whitehurst said. "We wanted to let the campus know that we existed. " To achieve this goal, Radio Refocuses for Students many approaches were tried. A new focus on campus news was implemented. Each director participated in promoting KHCA. Marcus Grayson and his sports staff conducted live remotes from athletic events. Other remotes included ticket giveaways conducted live from the Student Center for the Restless Heart concert. "This was a good year for change,'' music director Allison Dean said. A new and stronger programming was developed. Located at 560 AM and intermittently on cable TV-19, KHCA constructed a new plan for reaching out to the student body. "We, the directors, decided to focus more on the many campus activities to draw the listeners ' interests, " Whitehurst said. Practicum students gathered news and reported all types of sporting events, academic activi ties and service projects . "This heightened the awareness of the many activities available on campus, " Whitehurst said. The variety of music attracted more listeners. "We added a new format of contemporary Christian music which increased listenership ," Dean said. KHCA offered a different music format each night and included some specialty shows designed to increase the creative potential and variety for practicum students. - Julie Anderson Sophomore Steve LaRoche spins the tunes in Harding 's radio station .
