This year, RENEW, Harding's society for the environmentally concerned, worked toward its goals with a clearly-defined purpose. "We view ourselves as educators," said sponsor Deb Mueller. "We want to inform our members and the campus about important environmental issues and increase overall student awareness." Club president Peter Epton agreed. "Our purpose RENEW Rouses Recycling is to educate ourselves and others, and to encourage the wise use of . resources ," he said. Interest In order to accomplish these goals, the organization sponsored several activities throughout the year. "About twice a month we went out to pick up trash around the area," Epton said. "These cleanup efforts involved Riverside Park and the creek which runs beside the Jerry Moore Field. We also adopted Moss Street and picked up trash there on a regular basis," he added. In December, the club hosted speaker Suzanne Gross, a representative of the National Wildlife Federation. Grass's lecture focused on details regarding the Endangered Species Act. RENEW also played a major role in encouraging the formation of a new campus recycling program. During the spring semester, receptacles were placed in each dorm to facilitate collection of aluminum cans, white paper and cardboard. "Instead of throwing their recyclables away, most students helped out by tossing them into the containers," Epton said. - Tim Stanley RENEW president Peter Epton introduces Suzanne Gross. a representatiue from the iVationa! \Vi /dl(/e Federation.
