FRENCH: Campaigns, Activities Highlight Club's Year The French club was perhaps one of the most specialized of all the many diverse organizations at Harding. Its overall purpose was to learn and understand the French language and culture better, a goal which the club seemingly met this past year. " It takes French out of the classroom context and puts it into real life situations and practice," according to Shelley Walls, vice president of the organization. " We gain a different perspective of their way of living. ' ' French club members actively participated in last summer ' s international campaigns, going to both ~ French-speaking Canada ~ (Sheerbrook, Quebec) and~ Brussels. " Familiarity with! the language undoubtedly n c: 64 ORGANIZATIONS Iii =r ~ made the mission work much easier and more personal," Alonso Castro, club president, said. The members met together once every two weeks last year to discuss club business and to participate in unusual activities. For instance, the club had a Christmas party at Dr. Winfred Wright's house, where a native of France spoke to them about her home country and they ate crepes and a French version of apple pie. Members made it a point to meet for French games, including Meile Bornes, a board game in which players try to reach a destination before their opponents, and French versions of Monopoly and Scrabble. They also watched French movies, including Marie-Antoinette and Au Revoir, Les Enfants (" Goodbye, The Children"). The year culminated with a trip to Little Rock in the spring to see a Moliere play. Castro summed up the year enthusiastically, " It was a fun year for French!"+ - Kevin L.
