Brackett Library Built 1990 Services Reduce Stress Most students had intentions of making good grades. PASS (Program for Academic Success) was a special program for incoming freshmen who needed specific help improving their study skills, reading, English and mathematics. This program was set up to make its students well-rounded and prepared for future studies. The Leaming Assistance Center was the place to go when one needed help with just about anything. Entertaining chapel skits highlighted the program well. Students went to the LAC for tutoring, to use the word processors or learn more about careers. Siggy Plus was a computer program that used personality questions to propose career choices. Supplementary Instruction meetings, held three times a week, were open to the whole student body and were guided by supplementary instructors, students who were taking the courses. The remodeled library included a state-of-the-art computerized catalog and CD-ROM indexing in the fields of nursing, education, business and general periodicals. The library contained more than 340,000 volumes, 1272 periodicals and 11 newspapers. Some of the most valuable resources in the Brackett Library were the library personnel. Suzanne Spurrier, library director, headed a crack staff of willing and able help. The library was a source for both research and socialization. Its collection of materials and comfortable furnishings, along with the promise of friends also caught in the grips of studying, made it a hot spot on campus. Scholarship weighed heavily on many students. It was always good to know that there were a couple of places to go where others felt the same pressures and where a hand was there to help. + - Scott Baine
