Victory Over SAU Ends the ~eason With A Hit Even with the loss of hitters because of graduation, the baseball team was still competitive. "The team was fairly young," said Coach Steve Smith. Smith also said that the offense was better because of the leadership of veteran senior players. Larry Cheshier and Robert Cooper, both seniors, made all-conference. Cheshier had the strong batting average of .319, while Cooper held an impressive .372 batting average. Out of Cooper's 48 hits, 25 were extra base hits, including 5 home runs. Both Cheshier and Cooper tied for most homeruns and most RBI's. Throughout the season Edward tluerta and Nick Fouts were the outstanding pitchers. tluerta pitched five wins and six losses while Fouts pitched four wins and one loss. It was hoped that they would improve on their impressive firstyear records as they matured with the team. O ffense was better because of veteran players. The season was ended on a positive note by the triumph over Southern Arkansas University. Coach Smith, as well as the returning team members, had high hopes for the team in the future. " Losing Larry (Cheshier), Robert (Cooper), and Brandon (tlarreJI) will definitely affect us, " said senior Archie Shelton, "But hopefully someone will step up and take their places. I think we will be successful next year!" • tlighlights of the season were both wins against University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and the two very close games against Memphis State University and Ole Miss.
