Redding received the honor of being selected the winner of the Arthur Ashe Award. Many people believe that athletes are quote, "dumb bruts." Harding's athletes prove this to be a farce. When asked why Harding has dominated the Cliff Shaw Scholar-Athlete Award. Dr. Harry Olree, Athletic Director, commented, "Our coaches only recruit top notch students who are also good athletes. The athletes are people just like everyone else and are expected to handle the classes the same way nonathletes do. All the coaches set-up study sessions which their athletes are to attend for help if needed, but mainly to make sure the athlete st.udies. There has been many years that Harding has had several that could have won the award but only one from each AIC school could be nominated." Since 1953, a Harding University athlete has won the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference Cliff Shaw Scholar-Athlete Award J] times. The award was given to a senior Ale athlete, who had posted the highest academic grade point average and who had earned at least two athletic letters in Ale sponsored sports. A Bison athlete has won the award every year since 1976. Kyle Blickenstaff became the most recent recipient of the award in 1983. Blickenstaff has joined some other Bison elite like Joe Hightower, Jimmie Don Lawson, Dennis Organ, David Elliott and Eugene Smith 1lI not to mention the other eleven previous winners. Harding's success in winning the honor can be attributed to Harding's high goal of excellence for her students. The athletic department shows that it too is committed to excellence in the class room as well as on the field. This commitment has been shown by the Bison dominance in winning the Cliff Shaw Award as well as having many athletes named to all conference teams .-C$J ~Dauid D. Wall All Stars 79
