cember, the department hosted the Harding Invitational Debate Tournament that brought to the campus outstanding high school teams from various parts of the state. September 26 was a milestone for the department when the first local television program was broadcast from the University's television studio over Channel 12 a t the invitation of the local cable network owned by Searcy Video. Lou Butterfield served as personnel director. The 12 hours of programming per week gave mass communications majors valuable experience. Under the supervision of Daniel C. Tullos, speech therapy students operated a laboratory in speech correction that served the community as well as the campus. Students planning to enter the teacher education program were screened for hearing and speech problems. Members of the department were active in their professional organizations and provided leadership at both the state and regional levels. Dr. Garner served as secretary-treasurer of the Arkansas Speech Communication Association and Dr. Evan Ulrey , chairman of the department, served as editor of the Journal of Communication Studies published by the state association. During the summer of 1983, Dr. Ulrey attended the American Institute of Foreign Study at Richmond College in London and took classes on Literary London and Inside Parliament. He traveled in nine European countries . Mr. Tullos began work on his doctorate in speech therapy and Mr. Ellis worked on his doctoral dissertation in drama. During the summer, Mr. Ellis implemented a summer dinner theatre that had very good attendance . In the fall, he conducted an audition workshop to help students who were interested in drama participation. In the faU of 1983, the department had 73 declared majors with 36 in mass communications and 21 in speech therapy. During 1983, the University graduated 14 majors from the Department of Speech, including four in mass communications, three in speech , and seven in speech therapy.
