142 27 years of service For students whose daily treks across campus lead past the intramural fields, it is not unusual to see a sma ll blue pickup truck, parked to the side, and a tall white-haired figure laboring over the diamond's ground. Without looking under the baseball cap. almost everyone knows that the man is Cecil B.eck, director of Harding's intramural program for 27 years. 1979 CLUB All-SPORTS CHAMPIONS The 1979 club All-Sports champions were: A team" Large club, TNT; Small club , Theta Tau. Men's Intramurals His interest in the program grew from his physical education background and the influence of "Pinky" Berryhill, former head of the Physical Education Department. According to Beck, the program has seen changes from the time he was in school in the late 1940's. "When I was a student, intramurals were the only athletic activities on campus. Intercollegiate sports had been stopped for several years ," he explained. After assuming the direc torship, Beck added more sports and began giving trophies and more jackets . But he feels that the biggest change has been in the size of the program. "The program for intramurals and club sports has grown with the school. ·· Beck '3 usefulness and enthusiasm for intramural sports has been recognized by a number of students involved in the program. Ellis Augsburger believes the successfulness of the intramural program was due mostly to Beck's "taking time to organize activities which interest the students." As a result, he believes , "about 90 percent of the students participate in these act ivities. " "Mr. Beck does an outstanding job in organizing and maintaining the intramural program," Brent Miller felt , and that influenced his participation in the program. Mark Oliver believes that "Mr. Beck deserves a lot of admiration for the time he puts into the program."
