®~®@@lJi]}il~~~ briefs and profiles (continued) Entrepreneur wins Medal of Honor The American Studies Program, directed by Dr. Bill Cox, received a George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge. Receiving the same honor was the Harding College Center for Private Enterprise Education, under the direction of Dr. Diffine, for its publication, ''The Entrepreneur." Dr. Diffine personally received a George Washington Medal of Honor for his article, "Freedom from Want." Dr. David Burks. chairman of the Department of Business and Economics, published a textbook entitled, "The Christian Alternative for Business," to be used in the course on Christian Business Ethics required of all majors in the department. Dr. Mike O'Neal of Pepperdine University keynoted the annual fall ethics seminar held at Camp Wyldewood. Dr. Burks attended the annual meeting of the American Association of Collegiate School of Business as the department continued plans to seek professional accreditation by this body . The department made a complete reorganization of its curriculum for 1978-79. James R. Henderson, CPA, having completed all requirements except the dissertation for the Ph.D. degree in accounting from Texas A&M University, joined the faculty in June. Ken Johnson took a 15-month leave to work toward the Ph.D. in accounting at Louisiana Tech University. Bruce Nunnally, a senior accounting major, received a $2,000 scholarship from the American Accounting Association, one of 40 awarded students throughout the world. Charles Walker joined with Dr. Tom Howard, Director of Institutional Testing, in organizing the Howard-Walker Research and Marketing Association. They conducted state-wide polls during the 1978 gubenatorial race and various business polls, utilizing marketing majors in making the interviews. Self-study emphasizes new standards New standards emphasizing accountability, competency, field experiences and multicultural adaptation have been increasingly applied by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Efforts of the Department of Education were focused on the reexamination of its programs and the organ(~ation of a self-study strategy as time for the ten-year accreditation approached. To meet an increasing enrollment in special education and the need of elementary education majors for work in the diagnosis and correction of reading difficulties, Dr. Mary Ann Harris was added to the faculty. Also joining the faculty to direct the field experiences of student teachers was Richard Duke. Members of the faculty were active in state, regional. and national activities . Serving as members of NCATE teams were Dr. Jerome Barnes and Dr. Edward G. Sewell. In his capacity, Dr. Barnes visited East Central Oklahoma University and the University of Dubuque, while Dr. Sewell visited Benedictine College and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Other teachers served on North Central evaluation teams for various Arkansas high schools. Dr. Bobby Coker and Dr. Edward Sewell attended the annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. Dr . Wyatt jones was 'elected president of the Three Rivers Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa professional education society for 1978-79 and attended the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools; Dr. Harris and Mrs. Watson attended the Southwest Regional International Readers Association and Mrs. Brown attended the Conference on SpeCial Education hosted by the University of Kentucky. In spite of teacher surpluses in many areas of the country, the number of students entering the program at Harding remained at a high level and placement was nearly 100 per cent..
