Dr. Billy Ray Cox (American Studies) til Co ~ ! , For more than 25 years , the American Studies Pro~.dm at Harding has attempted to provide special opportunities for students, faculty, and friends through its special programs . This unparalleled program attempts to combine the best of the academic with real life experiences with people and events . "Outstanding leadership students who have maintained a minimum of a 'B' average and have majored in the areas of business, history or political science are invited to par- ~ ticipate fully In this special pro- f , gram," explained the program director, Dr. Billy Ray Cox . .Their participation includes trips to sites of historic , educational, and business interests . Cities visited include' Dallas, ·St. Louis, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington and Philadelphia . The 1979 spring tour included Jamestown, Williamsburg, Washington, Philadelphia and Valley Forge. This afforded the students opportunities to visit with government leaders and business leaders. All students participate in the program through required courses that stress history, economics and political science. In addition , all students have the opportunity to hear most of the special speakers who visit campus. The special lecture series was available to students . participating fully in the program, other students, and often the general public. Speakers for this school year included: General John Singlaub ; William E. Simon; Robert B1eiberg; Richard Hottelet; Dr. Frank Zarb; former Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg; Sam Walton, President of WalMart; Justin Dart, Chairman of Dart Industries; and Robert Parker, Chairman of Parker Drilling Company . "The American Studies Program attempts to provide students and leaders across .the mid-south with information that is both timely and relevant on a continuing basis," commented Vice-President Cox. "The success of the program is indicated by those who serve as sponsors on a continuing basis and through certain awards ." Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge has recognized the success of the program by awarding it the George Washington Medal of Honor for the past three years, and through other special awards such as the Jefferson Award.
