Students leav-e families, going'home' to'college Crowley's Ridge College, a small Christian junior college in northeast Arkansas, has as its motto, "Crowley's Ridge College, a college to come borne to." When 1 first heard that in a television commercial, I thought -it was really silly. - you ~.go· home from college, not to college. · Butthe more.I thought about it, the.more I realized the truth in that statement. ln a way, when you and 1 returned to college, we were coming home. Ttue, your real home can be Houston, Texas, or Naples, Pia., or Oil Trough, Ark. , or Royan, France, wherever your fumily and holl$e are located. Your freshman year you can really get homesick for home, for the family and frleQds you grew up with. Bot during your college years, too, you often begin to break some ties with home as you start to assert your own independence~ . Also true, Arkansas may not be your favorite place to come back to, with its endless rice fields, mosquitoes, heat, sweltering humidity and rain that comes only on weekends.! But think about it. Didn't you get a little "homesick" for school this summer. Not for the classes and responsibilities and pressures. But for the people, for that club brother or sister with whom you share nearly everything, for that rommate who has to cope with all your weird quirks, for that special friend of the opposite sex. To the freshmen we would like to say, welcome to Harding. We hope your years here are educational, happy and full of growth: But to everyone else we have just two words to say. Welcome home. J • •

classic lieauty: And now for a little social interaction. Craziness reigned on <d.mpus recently during men's and women's social club in– ductions. On Silly Day club pledges were often required to dress in funny costumes and participate in a variety of amusing activities. For example, TNT pledge Robert Chambers (top left) spent the day pretending to be a toilet. while Regina princess Kelly Thomas (top center), shown talking to sophomore Regina member Tammy Craft, dressed as a cavewoman. Singing on the stage in the Student Center was a common activity for club inductees, such as these pledges of Ko Jo Kai (bottom left) and the Ju Go Ju "cutle pies." (bottom right). Other events included a fake wedding for Shantih "slug" Kate Chastain and TNT pledge Tim Jernigan performed by sophomore TNT member Dan Deveny. and Regina's Queen for a Day, a mock beauty pageant in which pledge Mary Pyne, escorted by Chi Sig pledge Brian Price, tried tQ. look her ab olut~ ugliest.
