I Or. R. R. Coons and his wife, Dr. Callie Mae Goons, have been named recipients of the 1980 Harding Universi– ty Trustee Award. The award was presented to the ~uple in Sweetwater, Texas. Present to bestow the honor were Board members Richard Burt of Richardson, Texas and Milton Peebles of Hope, as well as Harding President Clifton L . Ganus Jr. and special represen– tative Al Fowler. The honorees were presented a certificate -whifh expressed "deep ap– preciation for their long, fruitful lives in the service of - their God and His creation, their accomplishments in scientific · research and ser– vice to our nation, their ge- ,,, nuine interest in the educa– tion of young people, their tremendous assistance to Christian education and their abiding faith in and helpfulness to the work at ·Harding University." According to Ganus, the Trus.tee Award is given an– nually '"to someone whom the Board considers to have been of great assistance to Harding University and to possess the character and spirit that Harding tries to instill in the lives of her young people. 11 1 Both honorees are former professors and department heads of Harding. Dr. Coons, noted for his research in acre . farm in Leesburg, Virginia. In 1978 they set up the Coons-Farrar Fund, in memory of Mrs. Coons' mother, Catherine Ann Far– rar Williams, who spent many years in service to the sick, injured and newborn. The Coons-Farrar Fund pro– vides scholarship aid and equipment for selected premedical and allied health' students. The Coons' daughter, Irma (Mrs. G. F.) Terpenning pf Frenchtown, New Jersey, graduated from Harding tn 1953. r I The couple -~stablish~n 1972 an Endowment Fund to strengthen Harding's hysical and · biological cience programs. To sup– irort the fund, tne.y donated e._ the _university their 226-, · analytical chemistry and for his teaching methods for freshman chemistry, served as chairman of the chemistry and physics department from 1924-26 and from 1933-37. His wife, who , has earned recognition in her studies of metabolism, nutrition and dietary analysis, headed the home economics department from 1924-26. The Coons have taught and worked with other colleges and universities throughout the United States, including Abilene Christian University The 1980 edition of the " Petit Jean"' Harding University's yearbook, has been rated All-American. The publication received marks of distinction in all five judging categories in– c!uding photography, c~py; display, coverAge and con-· 1 cept. It is a book which students should be extremely proud to own.'' The 1981 "Petit Jean" is now in the i'nak~ng, under editor Melanie McMillen of Monroe, La., who received the B .A. degree in applied psychology in December. Mrs. Coons also ser'ied for several years as director of the Human Nutriti6n Research Division of the U.S . oe·partment of Agriculture and as a member of the advisory committee for the White House Conference on Family LEGISLATIVE CITATION -J.
