The University has been repr.-ented at every national Alpha Chi convention since tbe lpl'ml of HU according to Dr. Pryor. Dean B. Priest, chairman of the mathematics department at Harding University, has been appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, according to Harding President Clifton L. Ganus Jr. The position has been held by Dr. Joseph E. Pryor, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who will retire in August after 40 years of service to the Univeoity. He became Oean in 1960. In the new position, Priest will have respon1ibility for coordinating the curriculum and activities of the 15 departments in the arts and sciences area. He will continue as chairman of the mathematics department, a position he has held since 1969. Within the mathematics department two administrative appointments have been made. Dr. Steve Smith has been named Assistant Chairman and Dr. Bill Oldham has been named Director of Mathematics Education. · Priest, 44, is a 1961 graduate of Harding and has been a·member of the faculty since 1962, when he completed a master's degree at the University of Mississippi. He earned the doctorate degree from the same in- stitution in 1969. · "We are very pleased to make this ap– pointment and are fortunate to have talented individuals such as Dean Priest on our faculty," said Ganus. "We feel that he will continue the tradition of excellence that Harding has established." Priest has twice been presented the Distinguished Teacher Award, in 1~ and 1975. He was the dedicatee of the 1983 Petit Jean yearbook. A native of Columbia, Tenn., he is married to the former Carolyn Pogue, also of Tennessee, and the couple bas five children: Teresa, Cheryl, Matilda, Laura and Dean Jr. Smith, a 1963 Harding alumnus, joined the · faculty in 1971. A professor of mathematics, he received · the doctorate ·from Florida State University in 1969. He is a native of Newport, Ark. Oldham serves as professor of mathematics and joined the Harding faculty in 1961. A graduate of Abilene Christian University, he obtained his Ed.D. in 1972 from the University of Northern Colorado. Oldham is a native of Paris, Texas. Since joining the Harding faculty, Priest has. been a regular contributor to national professional journals. He.has just completed a three-year term as chairman of the publications committee of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He directed ·the reviewing of manuscripts submitted by mathematics teachers throughout the United States for the NCTM for possible publication.
