making goals, breaking RE Junior defender Christian Ramos broke the individual soccer player goal record for Harding. Junior defender Christian Ramos, a member of the men's soccer team, broke Harding's individual soccer player record for the most goals in a single season. Ramos surpassed the previous record of 16 goals, scoring a total of 17 goals during the 2019 men's soccer eason. He broke the record at the Great American Conference during a game against NortheasternState University. Ramos said he did not anticipate breaking the record but was more focused on the team's effort. "It was just kind of unexpected; it really didn't hit me until after the game," Ramos said. "I really never paid attention to it. We always worry about the team first." Head Men's Soccer Coach Jonathan Ireland said Ramos was the first player he recruited at Harding. Ireland coached for Harding beginning in 2016 and said Ramos was a large part of the soccer team's success during his time at Harding. Ireland said Ramos would leave a hole in the team when he graduated. "Here we are four years later, and he's done," Ireland said. "And we ve had the most successful four-year run in the program's history: winning three conference championships, breaking all of our school records, and the most wins in a season, and he's been a big part of that." Alumnus Ben Farris previously set the record for most goals in a season in 2003. Sixteen years later, Ramos broke that record and ranked third among goal scorers in the nation with his score of 17 goals. While Ramos usually played as a defender, he also filled the position of midfielder during the 2019 season, giving him the opportunity to score goals more often. While Ramos did not score a goal in every game of the 2019 season he finished the season having scored 17 goals in a season of 17 games. Sophomore midfielder Brandon Patterson said he saw Ramos as a leader on the team because of Ramos' skill and personality. Patterson said Ramos was willing to stay late and help other players practice if needed. Though Ramos broke the record, Patterson said Ramos did not focus on his individual achievements. "He's definitely not a ball hog," Patterson said. "A lot of his goals were actually where he would just find a little bit of an open space. We'd pass it to him, and all he would do is maybe take a touch and then shoot." Ireland said he thought in the future Ramos would look back on his accomplishments as a student athlete and relish his success. "The best way to describe him is he's just a winner," Ireland said. "He's not afraid of anyone or any team. The bigger the game, the bigger he's going to play." story by Audrey Jackson 244 Scoreboard (9-7-2) William Jewell College / / 3-1, W Mississippi College // 0-0-2, T Delta State University// 1-2, L Oklahoma Baptist University// 4-2, W Southern Nazarene University // 3-0, W Newman University// 2-1, W Fort Hays State University// 1-8, L Ouachita Baptist University// 2-0, W Rogers State University / / o-6, L Northeastern State University / / 3-0, W Southern Nazarene University / / 2-2-2 , T Oklahoma Baptist University / / 6-3, W Fort Hays State University// 2-3, L Newman University// 3-1, W Ouachita Baptist University// 0-1, L Northeastern State University / / 3-5, L Rogers State University// 1-0, W Fort Hays State University// 1-3, L
