the Freshmen move out ofCathcart Hall at the end offall 2019 due to renovations. In fall 2019, women's residence Cathcart Hall was evacuated due to untimely renovations. Students were instructed to move out before the end of the fall semester, though renovations started before Thanksgiving Break. Heather Davis, Cathcart residence life coordinator (RLC), explained the process of moving students into new dorms on campus and plans for future renovations. "Cathcart was due for renovation next," Davis said. "They believed it would begin in the summer 2020, but after they got the quotes from the construction crew, they realized that it was a longer job than just one summer. It's going to be beautiful. The best option was to empty the dorm for this spring because there are fewer students each spring [semester]." Students were given the option to move to Stephens, Pattie Cobb or Kendall women's residence halls. Students also received a $175 credit to their student account for the spring 2020 semester. Freshman Bonnie Spann, Cathcart resident, explained how she was informed about the renovation issue and the process of moving out. Spann was out oftown the weekend ofthe dorm closure was announced and received text updates from friends about what to do next. "When I got back, my suitemate helped me move to my new room in about an hour," Spann said. "I wanted to move that day because my whole suite was gone, and they had things I needed. The move was definitely inconvenient, but I know that the staff was working extra hard to make it easier for us." The deans of student life called a meeting Nov. 13 with Cathcart residents and toid them the renovation would carry into the next semester. The deans informed the residents they had until the end of finals week to move out completely. Freshman Kailey Daniel, Cathcart resident, shared the process of moving out of her room and how she adjusted during the semester. "It kind of stinks having to move your whole life into a new place and figuring out if you'll be with the same roommates or not while trying to do school and especially with finals coming," Daniel said. "As a freshman, it's a little harder just because I finally adjusted to the fun and loud Cathcart." Many freshmen were excited for the change and saw their new dormitory as an upgrade. Freshman Peyton Sims said the one aspect she missed most about Cathcart was the open, social environment the building brought. "I feel like a lot of the friends I made there are spread out," Sims said. "In the end, I think it will be a funny story to tell as a freshman year experience." story by Will Allen & Katelyn Allen people 181
