Master of education graduate student Kenzie Thompson said she spent hours planning intervention lessons for her students at McRae. Thompson said she used a variety of teaching techniques such as multisensory activities and reading aloud to help her students overcome reading challenges. Thompson said they worked to make the sessions engaging and fun for the children. "They're playing; they're doing activities," Thompson said. "We try to make it fun. They've been in school all day, and then they have to come back to school." Master of education graduate student Kerri Kramer said the class held themed nights for Halloween and Christmas. The graduate students planned their lessons around themed activities to match the holiday and bring extra cheer. Kramer said their goal was to make the experience fun for students who had negative associations with reading. "I think the students already have so many negative associations with reading, and it's just been an awesome opportunity to get to build their confidence," Kramer said. story by Audrey Jackson academics 11 3
