It was the first time in several years where freshmen outnumbered seniors. A sistant Professor of Communication Dr. Ginger Blackstone was involved with "Live at 5," Hardings nightly live half-hour newscast, for three years. Blackstone wanted the students to do as much of the work as po sible and jumped in to help when necessary. "I [wasn't] sure how this year would go," Blackstone said. "I had a group ofstrong seniors that have been a part of the program for a while, but then, I did not have a whole lot of others." Blackstone was happy to see that a good number of incoming majors had shown interest in the news. "I thought this was a good opportunity for our experienced students to mentor and bring fresh talent and get people involved right away," Blackstone said. "For freshmen, they usually have a lot of time, and thi is a good thing because it gives us an opportunity to build our future of strong seniors." Five of the nine news anchor were freshmen during fall 2018. "For this new class to be big and so active and ready to be involved is a relief," senior broadcast journalism major Jack Allen said. "We know that at the end of the day that there will be people ready to lead the future coming forward." However, according to Allen, the first week was a rough start. "We have three hours to put together a 30-minute show, and I think to them it was overwhelming stepping in," Allen said. "They struggled to figure out their role and how to do it best." According to Allen, the seniorsmonitored what the freshmen class did and took on more of a reporting role instead of a dayto-day desk role. As for the freshmen, they were excited to take on the responsibility of anchoring "Live at 5" even though it was daunting at first. "I'm really enjoying it," freshman broadcast journalism major ColeClevenger said. "We did a week of rehearsals, and it is a big learning experience, honestly.... It's a live production, and I've never been in a live production before... so [Dr. Blackstone] really has helped with that [transition]." story by Bowman Johnson & Caleb Manor Freshmen Cole Clevenger, Trey Tonnessen and Dylan Johnston, students in the television practicum class, film freshman arah Hale andjunior Makayla Twigg during the Sept. 14, 2018, production ofHU16's"Live at 5 "broadcast in the Amy and Scott SewellDigitalProduction Studio.
