CONFIDENCE, CHARACTER & CAVALIERS Sophomore Caleb Henry traveled with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. S ophomore biochemistry major Caleb Henry spent summer 2018 traveling and playing in an internationally recognized junior drum and bugle corps based in Illinois known as the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. Henry first heard of the Cavaliers in high school. "My band director in high school actually marched with chem," Henry said. "So that is when I was introduced, and it was just an interest for high school bands." According to Henry, he watched videos of the Cavaliers from previous years and became interested in crying out. "I knew that it was something that I wanted to do," Henry said. According to Henry, he bought all of the practice materials and would practice in the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Music and Communication almost every day for two to three hours. During the summer, the Cavaliers practiced for approximately nine hours a day. Dr. Wesley Parker, associate professor of music and director of athletic bands, added Henry to the Thundering Herd Marching Band on the day of the first football game of the 2017-18 season. According to Parker, the process of getting into any competitive drum corps was extensive and highly competitive. "To get into a group like [the Cavaliers] you have to be at the top of your game," Parker said. "It was not uncommon co see him practicing and marching in the chorus room or the band room." According to Parker, he was elated when news of Henry joining the Cavaliers was released. Senior Devin Daniel, fellow band member, talked about Henry's attitude when he returned from the Cavaliers after the summer. "What is great is that he came back [to the Thundering Herd] with a humble attitude about [the Cavaliers]," Daniel said. "We are an entertainment band; we like to play and march. And he came back wanting to play and to march." Henry planned to join the Cavaliers again in summer 2019. He felt that he did not know what to expect going into the Cavaliers and coming out of it meant much more to him, as he expressed that the experience helped him grow as a person. story by Bowman Johnson On Oct. 30, 2018, sophomore Caleb Henry wears his Cavaliers jacket on the Front Lawn.
