SENIOR CREATES STUDENTS WI-TH WORDS Cayleigh Thomas I I PHOTOS Abigail Cooper APP TO HELP HOMEWORK When senior Adria Abella Villafranca, originally from Lleida, Spain, came to Harding to play on the tennis team, he had an idea that he hoped would reach many. Villafranca, along with his father, created a computer application called Studem10. Villafranca and his dad made the plans, designs and goals for the app when they were in pain, and Villafranca used his time at Harding to expand on his dream. Student10 was designed to help with homework problems. It cost around $20 a month and allowed a user to upload 20 problems, or more with extra purchases, to receive help on unsolvable problems. "For [some] problems to be solved, a guardian had to ask the question," Villafranca said. "We designed it like this so that a student wouldn't do [their] entire homework." Villafranca planned to hire tutors at the beginning of the app's development to solve the problems that people presented. "Later down the road, we planned to have the community answer the questions," Villafranca said. "The app would give rewards to people who were able to correctly solve a problem, so when a person approved the answer as correct then the person who responded would get [monetary] compensation." Villafranca's plan for the app was to be used to help non-native English speaker students learn English, according to senior Juan Prieto, a friend of Villafranca. "He came up with the idea before he moved to the U.S. and learned how to improve his plan," Prieto said. Villafranca decided to build Student10 for business and the greater student community as a whole. "The app also had a space where people could solve problems for free," Villafranca said. "That way the app would be more like school at someone's house but for a much lower cost." Villafranca pitched the idea to investors, prepared a business plan for the app and created a budget while he attended Harding. Senior Thelma Garcia fartinez, another friend of Villafran.ca, spoke highly of his work ethic. "Since Adria came to Harding, he's shown passion for doing new things," Martinez said. "He put a lot of effort in what he does." Villafranca used his time at Harding to continue developing the app and was excited to see where his plans took him. "To create a business [takes] a lot of time and effort," Villafranca said. "I had to fully dedicate my time in my idea to believe in it, to sleep with it, to eat with it and live with it."
