2016-2017 Yearbook

EXTREME MAKEOVER • • CLUB SPORTS EDIT ION By Dustin Schandevel Club sports saw a huge change in format in 20 I G. Instead of clubs being split up between large and small, a middle division was created. In addit ion, tournaments were no longer in double-elimination formal, but round robin. To decide what teams would be selected for middle division, each club's success from the preYiou year was reviewed. The teams that did not do ,,-ell in large were put into middle and the teams that finished exceptionally well in small diYision were bumped up LO middle. Jim Gm,en, director of club sports and intramurals, said these changes were made to create better competition. '·Before, you had teams sign up knowing they would only get to play two games and be out," Go,,·en said. "It's much bellcr if you can divide your leagues based on competition level." Teams in the middle di\·ision could mo\·e up to large if they played well after the season in the new format. The lowest-ranked team in the large diYision could get bumped dmrn to middle and the best finisher in the small division could get bumped up to middle. Gowen said that he was unsure if this would be a change eYery year or n·cry other year. \\'omen·s ocial club Delta :s;u started the year in large di\·ision, but switched positions "·ith ,,·omen's social club Delta Gamma Rho and went clown Lo middle.Junior ;\farisa Ewing, \\·ho played A-team for Delta Nu, liked the change or scenery playing in middle division. "I think for Delta Nu as a whole it's been good," Ewing said. "It's just not fun for us to play other large d ubs and lose by 50 points every game." For round robin. ev<"ry team pbyed each other in their division once. After the first round of play. the team with the best record in the diYision was crowned champion. The new format took away the championship game th at the double-elim ination fo rm at deli\·ered. Senior PhilipJudd, athletic director of men's social club Sub T-16, was disappointed with the moYe. "[Sub T] loves to watch big games,"J udcl said. '·Not having a championship game will take the fun away lor the fans." Ewing liked the change from double elimination to round robin because it allowed them to play more games. "'It's made us be a little more competiti\·e,'· Ewing said. '·As a Learn, you really come together after that second or third game so it's nice to play more and not be eliminated after two." Gowen said that after the year ,ms finished, they would examine how successful the changes were and determine if they \\'Ould continue to use the same format for the years LO come.
