w H E N y 0 u R s I STER BECOMES YOUR ZISTER B)' Sara Dennt")' It 1rns not until after seniors Emily Giboney and B1i La}erney had been elected as Yice presidents of Zeta Rho that they realized the potential responsibility uf induCLing both of their little sisters into the club where they had found a family. Emily and Bri both said they suspected that their sisters, fi·eshmen Abbey Gibone1 and \ 'alerie Laferney, ll'Oulcl choose to join Zeta Rho. ··I kne1,· that [Valerie] had to do Zeta Rho but [ was trying to be careful not lo push lher].'' Bri said. '"Sometimes it would sneak out and I would tell her to join my club. I really wanted her to do it, but I tried to keep my distance so she ll'oulcln't do it just because or me." The somber attitude the Yice presidenb in Zeta Rhu took toward their incoming mcmbrrs during club week pro1·ed to be more difficult when their little sisters were the ones receiving that attitude. Club members tended to act stern during club week. "I feel like l kinda got into the zone when I put my \'P face on," Emily said. '"l would avoid looking at .\bbcy because I was a fraid I would break.·' Abbey said she and Valerie struggled with being serious at times, too. \ \'hen Emil) raised her voice, Abbey said she had a hard time not laughing because it was the ~ame 1·oice Emily used while lifeguarding 01·er the summer. "She use h r lifeguard voice when she yells and I would always laugh," Abbey said. Despite the difficulties of keeping a straight face throughout club week, there were many rewarding moment . too. "I think it's really cool that I get to be in the same club as Bri," Valerie said. ··It's neat to sec her role in that family and her role in the club. It makes me admire her more." According to Emily, gelling to jersey their little sisters \\'as one of the highlights of the week. "It was really run because I really liked the moments when I got to transition from being VP to fbeing] her big sister, both biological and through Zeta Rho,'· Emily said. The freshmen both said they enjoyed \\'Caring their sisters' jerseys because they alrea ly had their last names on the back. As Zeta Rho became a family tradition tor the Giboney and Laferney sisters, Valerie said their mom was starting to feel left out. "I'm pretty sure that our mom \\'ants LO be in [Zeta Rho] because she sometimes sings the club song and trie~ to do our cheers,'' Valerie aid. Bri said she vrns happy that Valerie joined Zeta Rho because of how much Zeta Rho had clone for Bri throughout her college career. "I'm glad she is my 'zister' because, as my sister, she is my best friend in the world," Bri said.
