2015-2016 Yearbook

EDITOR'S NOTE CHANGE IS A PART OF LIFE. CHANGE HAS NEVER BEEN EASY. CHANGE IS GOOD. My freshman year I didn't even know Harding had a yearbook until the day they came out, and now, I'm a senior sitting in the editor-in-chief office and thinking about how freshman me would be shocked at the course my life has taken. Not just because of yearbook, but in my thoughts, my actions, my friends, my life goals and my plans. If my life were written out to see all at once, it would be riddled with endless contradictions. And so would yours. Does that make us hypocrites? Absolutely not. We are humans with a plan written for us by someone greater. Our life is composed of nothing but changes and how we adapt to them. This is something I've always believed and something represented in the concept of "multitudes." I found the Walt Whitman quote while scrolling through Pinterest. Usually I'm not the kind of person who identifies with the script-text-overfloral-backgrounds quotes, but something in me clicked, and I immediately knew what I wanted to express with this book. One of the greatest periods of change and contradiction in our lives occurs during college. Through the years, yes, we change, but even in our day-to-day lives and roles, we change. Harding is composed of social clubs, athletics, academics and more. Every hour we could be changing the hat we wear. We act professionally at work and with our professors. We act crazy when we're with our friends but not so crazy when we're with our families. We act differently in each of those roles, and that's not a bad thing. We are who we are at our core despite the contradictions in our lives. We are large. We contain multitudes. I wanted to symbolize this in the design of this book. In the beginning, everything is clean and aligned. Everything is simple. As the book goes on, it's much more expressive and complicated. Pictures overlap and not everything is centered in the middle of the page; however, I wanted the folio to stay in the middle to represent an anchor or our core. The book is cohesive and whole, just as our lives are, despite the contradictions. I hope the next time you pick up this book, you think about who you were the last time you picked up this book. I hope you think about the changes and contradictions you went through at Harding and think about how they made you grow. I hope you think about the changes and contradictions you've gone through in life after Harding. I hope you think about the changes and contradictions you went through in 2015 and 2016. I hope this book reminds you of your time in college and how it helped you expand your multitudes. Never feel bad about or be scared of change within yourself. Be large. Contain multitudes. ,'1, \HG/ ms C wnm, HI )ITO/?- l,\'- C/ I I HF :l :l fi C L O S t:\' (;
