2015-2016 Yearbook

GODSPEED TO GOODSPEED As an accounting major with a 4.0 GPA, junior Lucas Goodspeed was a success in both the classroom and on the cross-country team. In June 2015, he was named Capital One Academic All-American and (first-team) All-Great American Conference. Goodspeed credited his success to careful time management. He planned his assignments and commitments each week to give himself a better chance of accomplishing it all. "People don't realize how much of a commitment it is to participate in a collegiate sport," Goodspeed said. "Success in school comes the same way as success in sports - through hard work and sacrifice." Goodspeed said one of the things that originally drew him to Harding was not just the opportunity to expand his cross-country career, but to begin his work career in the Paul R. Carter College of Business. With several academic and athletic accomplishments under his belt, such as receiving allregion honors and maintaining his 4.0 GPA, Goodspeed said he was also proud of the crosscountry team's improvement. Fellow teammate sophomore Larry Lopez emphasized the importance of a strong bond among the team members. "We all want to place well individually," Lopez said. "But more importantly, we care about how the team does as a whole because of the special friendship we all have with each other and the bond we share." As a fellow teammate and team captain, senior Russell Chase understood that to have the discipline to succeed in a difficult major and also be a top competitor required nonstop work. Chase said Goodspeed earned the credit he received and was a well-respected leader of tl1e team, according to Chase. "Lucas is a leader by example," Chase said. "He does this through his unrelenting drive to get better, his humble Christian nature and through his confidence. It rubs off on all of us." By Addison Hurst 2 2 B .\T II LET IC S /,~ 1
