HUMANE DELTA NU MEMBERS BOND OVER UNIQUE SERVICE PROJECT S ervice projects were an important part of club activities; clubs did service projects during Club Week and throughout the semester. Members from women's club Delta Nu decided to volunteer at the Searcy Humane Society. The Humane Society of Searcy, a sanctuary for animals, primarily cats and dogs, welcomed volunteers since they were able to help out with chores and give the animals personal attention. Sophomore Scarlet Schreiner, service project director for Delta Nu, organized the event because she knew a number of girls in the club liked animals. "I just remember we were at our spiritual retreat, and there was a stray dog there," Schreiner said. "It just looked like it needed love, so we took it [to the shelter] afterward because it wasn't being taken care of. I thought it would be a really good idea if we just went there and helped out in any way that we could." When the girls visited the animal shelter, they did a number of different jobs: walking the animals, brushing them, feeding them and, most importantly, connecting with them. While working with the animals, the girls had the chance to meet animals from all backgrounds. "Some of the dogs and cats come from abusive situations where you can tell that they weren't given love and they hate personal contact," junior Mary Alice Stovall said. Many of the animals such as Goliath the black lab and Big Poppa the kitten left a lasting impression on the girls. Many of the girls also learned valuable lessons from making personal connections with the animals as well as some of the jobs that they had to perform. "Whenever I work there sometimes I get stuck with the grossest jobs, but it's humbling," Stovall said. "You learn so much about what it really means to love someone and take care of them. It mirrors what we are supposed to do for each other." According to sophomore Molly Barlow, the club members' mutual love of animals made the service project a bonding experience for the entire group. The girls also enjoyed interacting with the other volunteers and workers they met at the shelter. "I love the volunteers," Stovall said. "Most of them are the ... sweetest ladies that ... are doing it because they feel that they honestly love it there." Delta Nu members enjoyed participating in a different sort of service project. Working with animals was refreshing, and the girls enjoyed working and learning together. "I think the animals bring out the best in people," Schreiner said. "Even the meanest person can have a pet and love it with all their heart." Amber Houston/Mallory Pratt Junior Erin Cook paints faces at Southwest Middle School for a block party Sept. 22.
