2012-2013 Yearbook

TEAM PLAYER Club athletics provide an outlet for athletic interest and competition S ince she was a young girl in peewee basketball, junior Hayley Scott had loved the game of basketball. Freshman year, Scott planned to try out for Harding's basketball team, but instead decided to focus on relationships and academics. "I wanted to play collegiate basketball because you come in already having a family, but when I didn't try out for the team, I went my whole freshmen year feeling like there was something missing," Scott said. When she joined Pi Theta Phi fall 2011 , Scott knew her club participation would include club athletics. Scott realized playing alongside PTP members would be different from peewee leagues and high school. The bond she had shared with her club members changed the way she approached the game. The game was about more than playing basketball; it was another way to build upon strong friendships. "They were just people you can always go to and you know you can count on," Scott said. "It was great to be around them in the sports setting as well." PTP beau senior Hector Felix, who attended many of the basketball games and served as the coach, said the girls had great attitudes while competing with other teams. 'They weren't as worried as much about winning as just having a good time," Felix said. "Don't get me wrong, they were competitive, but they knew it was just a club game." Though some clubs were athletic rivals, and the players did their best, Scott knew that when the game was over, the competiveness was over too. Friendships both with fellow club members and girls in other clubs were the most enjoyable aspect of club sports. "On the court you wanted to beat the other team, but off the court you were friends again," Scott said. Felix said Scott's passion for basketball was evident, and her cheerful attitude made her a valuable asset to the team. "Hayley was a great team player," Felix said. "She is unselfish with the ball and always wants to make her teammates look good." Sophomore Katie Brewer, who played with Scott on A team, was confident in Scott's skills as a player. Every time Brewer got a hold of the ball, she looked for Scott down the court. All I wanted to do was pass her the ball on offense and have her under the net to rebound on defense," Brewer said. "She definitely was a team player and one to watch." In the championship game on Feb. 7, PTP lost to DGR. Scott, however, was not disappointed in losing the game because she had found the family she was looking for through her PTP sisters. Kristi Soto Zeta Rho est. 1961: Row 1: E. Ford, E. Wood, K.
