SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN Southern Proper sponsors Gamma Sigma Phi's tailgate for Homecoming Food, games and team spirit brought fans from across campus and across the nation to the Ganus Athletic Center for the Homecoming tailgate in support of the Bison football team Oct. 27. The tailgate, called the "X-Treme Tailgate," included a petting zoo for children, music from the marching band and a performance by the cheerleaders. Many social clubs, such as Delta Gamma Rho, Pi Theta Phi and Gamma Sigma Phi, coordinated an area to set up grills for cooking out, games and fellowship with other fans. The theme of the GSP tailgate was "Southern Proper," named after the clothing company that produced upscale Southern-gentleman style clothing. The brand was popular among club members, such as junior Logan Page, who was a campus representative for the company, according to sophomore club member Davis Barnhill. The tailgates, particularly the GSP tailgate, were created to foster fellowship between club members and to introduce other students to the clubs. 'The purpose of the GSP tailgate was to encourage others, especially some of the future pledges, to come out and hang out and have a good time before the football game," sophomore Sam Acuff said. Page, a swag director for Gamma Sigma Phi, said he did the majority of the preparations for the event with help from his family, friend senior Kallsy Mitchell and members of GSP. "I think that having a tailgate is such a huge part of the college experience, and I feel like in years past it is something that Harding hasn't put much emphasis on," Page said. "However, I feel like the turnout and school participation in all of the tailgating really got students and alumni involved and excited for the game." Gamma Sigs borrowed a large grill from Centennial Bank and cooked more than 160 portions of hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwursts and bison burgers. The club tent also had a television set up to watch the Arkansas vs. Ole Miss game an,d games including ladder ball and corn hole. According to Page, the GSP tent had a great turnout. Club members, queens, alumni and family members enjoyed the festivities. Senior queen Emily Freitag said the success of a tailgate was measured by the number of people in attendance, and GSP estimated more than 150 people visited their tent, after taking into account how much food was eaten. The GSP "Southern Proper" Homecoming tailgate was a friendly place for both club members and other people in the Harding community to celebrate Harding's successful and longstanding football team through food and fun.
