Relay for Life was an event that raised money, support and awareness for the American Cancer Society, attempting to combat one of the most devastating diseases in the U.S. Fundraising took place year-round across the country, and Harding students and clubs made their contribution by fundraising and planning for their relay as early as April. Each team that signed up online had a goal of raising $1,000 prior to the event on Friday, Oct. 7. The night was considered a success by many who attended; it served as both a time of remembrance for those who lost their battle with cancer and a time of celebration for those who had conquered the disease. The overall theme of Relay for Life was "It's a Small World with a Big Hope." Clubs and other participants were encouraged to choose a countryrelated theme. Women's social club Iota Chi chose to represent -Ireland, while Shantih chose Hawaii and Zeta Pi Zeta represented England. The clubs raised money for the American Cancer Society by selling baked goods and T-shirts and receiving donations from local businesses. "It's a time where we can all come together and unite to support a really great cause," sophomore Antasia Lewis said. "We need moments and opportunities where it doesn't matter what jersey you're wearing; it's a time to congregate together and help raise money for cancer research." As opposed to past years when the event was held on the track, this year Relay for Life was held on the front lawn. Booths were set up on the perimeter of the quad in order to be easily accessible for a quick stop during the relay. Clubs used the booths as a way to socialize and have a little fun throughout the night, with Delta Nu spray-painting Bill Cosby shirts andju GoJu serving personalized Sonic drinks with different flavor options. "The majority of our teams this year were clubs, and they each did a greatjob fundraising and bringing spirit to the event," Director Andrea Stackpole said. Relay for Life Director Weston Vogl said he had a wonderful experience working the event with Stackpole, who was responsible for finding people for committees, and training all workers for their appointed tasks throughout the night. "We had a wonderful committee this year, so Andrea's and myjob was easy, to be honest," Vogl said. At the peak of the night, approximately 300 people were relaying, with over 400 signed up online. Many students agreed that there was no better way to spend time with friends than by supporting the fight against cancer, bringing hope to thousands around the world. Stacy Hall Social Clubs 1-5
