Looking to combine school spirit with social club excitement, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) found the perfect solution this fall: club tailgating at home football games. Clubs used the opportunity to build stronger bonds among members and other clubs, and CAB saw it as a means for promoting a more campus-wide tailgating experience. Senior Spencer Carroll, president of Chi Sigma Alpha, said the tailgating was a great way to increase school spirit before the games. "Personally, I think tailgating should be a bigger thing here at Harding," Carroll said. "We are missing out on a piece of college by not having a bigger showing." Senior Brent Simmons, a member of TNT, loved supporting the football team in this way. "The thing we enjoyed the most from tailgating was the fellowship and just getting to be with everybody as we show school spirit on game day," Simmons said. Pikes president junior Ryan Gardner also saw the tailgates as an opportunity to support club members on the football team in a fun, relaxing way. "We simply enjoy getting together, grilling food and hanging out in the fun environment that is offered by tailgating," Gardner said. In addition to spending time with members, many clubs used tailgating as a way to get to know potential new members of clubs. Tailgate socialization served as unofficial mixer time for prospective club members, who valued the chance to get in a few extra conversations. "I loved seeing the potential pledges at the Ko Jo Kai tailgate," junior Kojies member Nina Dowell said. "I felt like they were really trying to get to know us, and open house is so awkward for me, so it was nice to get to know them in a relaxed, informal setting." Whether tailgating turned out to be a widespread phenomena or a simple time of fellowship for club members in future years, club members felt one thing was certain: there was no better way to spend a Saturday than to grill some hot dogs, talk with friends and cheer on the Bisons.
