broaden our ~RIZ.ONS London, England, was one of those cities that appeared on nearly everyone's list of places to visit. Travelers could spend days touring the famous sites in the city, such as Big Ben and Saint Paul's Cathedral, not to mention numerous other must-see locations just several hours outside the city center. For a group of students from the College of Business Administration (COBA), however, London was more than a tourist attraction; it was home for the summer. COBA made the trip to London every year with a small group of students to experience the British lifestyle and get an inside look at many international businesses operating out of the city as well. "We got to see how international businesses are run and see their different strategies and marketing," senior marketing major Callie Huey said. "We were able to compare how businesses there were run to the way we have learned American businesses are run." The group visited seven major companies in London, including Deloitte, an accounting agency; Lloyd's TSB, one of the four main banks of the United Kingdom; and Sky Broadcasting, a major British broadcasting company. Students were then required to write papers over their experiences, describing what they learned at the businesses. Students also took I0 hours of college credit while attending the program, which could count toward a Bible class, strategic policy, international business or humanities. Students who took humanities put together presentations to give previews of places the group was going to see, including Oxford, Dover, Avebury/Stonehenge and Wimbledon. "Wimbledon was my favorite group trip," Huey said. "I play tennis, so I was excited to go and see a place I have always seen on TV It was the men's semi-finals, so we got to see the Brian brothers, Rafael Nadal [and] Andy Murray. We were up close on the smaller courts while they were warming up, and I got Nadal's autograph." The trip lasted a total of four weeks in London, followed by two final weeks of free travel. The time spent in London gave the students plenty of opportunities to take in all of the history and modern culture the city had to offer, providing a sense of independence in one of the most historical and diverse cities in the world. "I had an amazing experience," junior marketing major Chase Henderson said. "This trip broadened my horizons in ways I never could have imagined." Kasey Coble 5+ Summer Overseas Programs
