At\~.f-AJ:.~ ON HELPING the helpless Focused on volunteering and helping the VVhite County community, new organization Volunteer Harding provided students with a new outlet to serve. Begun by senior Milton Stewart in combination with the efforts of fellow classmate senior Ben Ash, Volunteer Harding helped students create and execute their own ideas about what it meant to serve. ''Around my sophomore year, Milton Stewart and I talked about starting a group like this, thatjust focuses on doing work for others," Ash said. "Think about the Bisons for Christ Day of Service and all the good work that we as Harding students do then. Why only once a year? Volunteer Harding gives us an opportunity to help other than during a specific activity." Volunteer Harding had four main ministries on which it focused. As part of the student mentoring ministry, students volunteered at local schools twice a week, and the elderly ministry assisted at nursing homes. The ready response group stood on call to help around the community whenever the need arose, and a group organized worldwide shipments of medical supplies out of three warehouses inJudsonia. The organization also planned one large service event each month. Ash added that the most important goal of the organization was to get their name out to the public and offer their services to as many people as possible. "The thing we really want to get the word out about is the fact that we are here," Ash said. "We would love to act like a contracting business, where people come to us with their problems and we send members of our group to go help." Stewart agreed, saying the organization reflected the core values of what Harding was about. "I believe this organization will impact the volunteers by teaching them the necessary steps to get volunteer projects accomplished," Stewart said. "To the people we help, they will be able to see Christ through our service and our love for the people in our community." Stacy Hall/Sarah Eason Organizations f 2 T
