obs.~"i"~ FLIGHT THROUGH mathematics Harding's chapter of the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was a student organization designed to help students in the engineering program network with professionals. It connected students with specialists in a variety of engineering environments, giving opportunities to these students both during and after college. "With the ASME, it's not just about learning scientific theoretical knowledge; it's about applying it to real things that are going to be used by people in the real world," senior Taylor Gammon, student chair of the Harding chapter, said. "The goal of a mechanical engineer, particularly a Christian one, is to work toward improving the quality of life for individuals. I personally want to use my engineering abilities to help those who are less fortunate in some way." This year, the ASME invited several guest speakers to campus to speak about their specialized fields and how interested Harding students could prepare for jobs and internships. Guest speakers included Andy Pratt and Robert Skinner from Bryce Corporation andJosh Gibb from Eaton, among others. In addition to these speakers, the ASME also hosted workshops in which students learned more about specific topics, such as Matlab, SolidWorks motion and other computer software, from faculty members. Junior David Bell said the organization would be nothing without the great faculty and program already present. "I love the engineering program at Harding," Bell said. "Specifically, I really like the way that a lot of the classes are small and the way the professors are really good, and you can interact with them. Even with out-of-school projects, I can ask professors for advice." Junior Derek Laxton thought the engineering program at Harding was so successful because its professors taught critical thinking skills in addition to facts and equations. "I think Harding does a really good job," Laxton said. "As an engineer, you go out and don't really know; everything you learn in school could just be thrown out the window. You don't really [have] anything but the process of how to solve problems, and Harding does an excellent job of that." Zachery L. Decker AS Me Row 1: D. Laxton, S. Morton, T. Gammon, B.
