• • • ft' AIStl"~ I" ADIFFERENT tongue Joseph Magness, a 20 ll Spanish department graduate, assumed a new role as adjunct professor for the spring semester. Part of his mission, he said, was reworking the department's Wednesday night Spanish devo. "One day I got a call from Ava Conley [chair of the Spanish department], asking me to organize devos," Magness said. "Leading the devos has pushed me outside my comfort zone while helping others." This year, Magness began leading devo for lower level students. He designed fill-in-the-blank worksheets in order to talk about subjects such as the Great Commission and parables, receiving feedback from discussion questions. "We make the lessons based on what they want," Magness said. "We talk about the words they didn't understand and are getting lots of good questions from l 00 level students, the ones you would think would be least responsive. We are trying to make the devos more missions-oriented since many students who study Spanish are interested in mission trips, so we teach them how to talk about key terms such as 'sin' and 'glory of God.' They really enjoy it." Senior Amy Stevens said there was something special about combining a talent for Spanish and a passion for God. "It causes me to focus completely when listening to the speaker in order to fully understand what he is saying," Stevens said. "It brings all of Harding's ideals together into one cohesive mix of using your talents to glorify God." Magness was enthusiastic and said he felt that God was doing great work through him and the rest of the Spanish department. "The great thing about Spanish devo is that everyone can get something out of it while putting something into it," Magness said. "Right now, we have 60 to 80 people in attendance. There's just something about sitting on a cold, marble floor for an hour of praising God that brings me a warm feeling. The experience is such a joy." Sarah Eason MSA0 Row 1: P. Adeoye, S. Cheng, H.
