A group of students on a theater trip, however, caught a glimpse of what it would be like to have a career as an actor or actress. Six students spentJan. 3-l 0 in New York City, seeing shows and studying the history of theaters. They also learned about life in the theater business by meeting with small-town Christian actors and actresses and theater businesses. Senior Cassie Bennett said her favorite part of the trip was the shows. "I got to watch eight different shows while on the trip, and almost all of them included at least one actor that I greatly admire," Bennett said. "The one I was most excited about was getting to see Alan Rickman in 'Seminar' and getting his autograph afterward. I have been a huge fan of Rickman for years, even before his 'Harry Potter' fame, so getting to see him in person was amazing." Students also received advice from local actors about how to establish themselves should they decide to pursue a career in New York City. "I got to learn what it's really like to go job hunting and to earn a living in the big city from people who have lived and worked in New York for years," Bennett said. "Hearing that you really can make it if you want to from professionals who also came from a little town was very encouraging." While most of students on the trip were theater majors, the only prerequisite for the trip was a speech class. Senior HannahJackson, a general studies major, took advantage of what the trip had to offer. "I learned how [New York] life is and how the people that have made it big have worked their tails off,"Jackson said. "I have an appreciation for my theater friends and what they do." In addition to soaking up the theater aspect of the city, students also had the opportunity to sightsee. "My favorite part was seeing the sunset from the Empire State Building," Jackson said. "As the sun was going down, the lights were coming alive." Whether these students would eventually end up in New York or not, the energy of the city was enough to make them want to come back again and again. Kasey Coble Organizations f03 4WWL
