'-... ~wM-H-i"~ THEIR STUFF for a cause When a group of Harding fashion merchandising students approached Rebecca Boaz, instructor of family and consumer sciences, about the possibility of putting on a fashion show, they were met with enthusiasm. This type of production had been a goal of the program, and, in fall2012, students and faculty members made it a reality. The event, entitled "Walk This Way," was held on Nov. 29 in Cone Chapel. Approximately 20 fashion. merchandising m~ors produced the show, with another 40 students modeling on the catwalk. "The students did all the real work," Boaz said. "Christa Smith and Bonnie Stroud were in charge, but there were many other fashion merchandising majors who had important roles as well. I loved watching the students take control of this project. They have talked about putting on a fashion show for several years, and this group actually did it. I'm very proud of them." Although the show was created in order for the fashion merchandising program to gain publicity, they modeled for a cause. Ticket proceeds from the show went to support research for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, which impaired voluntary muscle movement through the deterioration of nerve cells. Donations were made in honor of ALS patient Nancy Chandler, mother of junior Anna Grace Chandler. "It's better for a cause," senior Whitney Chambers said. "I think if you're going to do anything, you should do it for a reason that's going to honor God." The show went entirely as planned with minimal mishaps and was considered a great success for the department. By the end of the event, there was standing room only in Cone Chapel. "I feel that the show was a complete success, especially for our first effort," Boaz said. "We did learn some things in the process that we might want to do differently next time. We sold most of our tickets at the door and didn't set up enough chairs. When it became apparent that we were going to run out of seats, we had to scramble around and bring in more chairs. But I would rather have that situation than have a bunch of empty seats!" Matt Ryan Organizations '11R~WWW
