It was the first time she had ever seen people living in poor circumstances, and although she was familiar with the poorer areas of her own hometown, she could not believe what she saw. "I remember having the urge to want to do something more," Kuhn said. Though this was the first time Kuhn had experienced a specific calling towards inner-city ministry, she was able to see how the seeds of her passion had been planted much earlier. As a child, Kuhn lived in a home where people who were down on their luck were always welcome. "My parents always taught me to love people without limits," Kuhn said. "When I was younger, my parents always offered our home as an open door. They were constantly giving of themselves." When Kuhn came to Harding, her passion for inner-city ministry was only further explored through a spring break campaign in Orlando, Fla. She had not planned on going on a campaign, but when she saw the opportunity to do Vacation Bible School in an inner-city environment, she could not resist. "Going on that trip really encouraged even more my yearning to be a part of people's lives in the inner-city," Kuhn said. "It really showed me that God's love knows no boundaries. His love doesn't know race, doesn't know social status, and doesn't know labels." 100 people Kuhn also spent the summer before her sophomore year volunteering at a homeless shelter and soup kitchen. She learned a valuable lesson that summer about the homeless. "Another thing that I love about that community of people is the hope and life that I see just waiting to break lose in their lives," Kuhn said. "I see brokenness, but I know that I serve a God who loves to restore." Sophomore Morgan Jones worshipped with Kuhn at an inner-city church, where she saw how much Kuhn loved helping those in need. "Amber has taught me the importance of selflessness," Jones said. "She lives her life in a way that reminds me that material things really are not everything in this world and that we are here for so much of a greater purpose." Kuhn was working on her degree in family life education, which she believed would be very helpful for her ultimate goal of working in the~~nner-city environment. Though Kuhn felt a particular pull towards Detroit, Mich., she did not want to be too narrow-minded 1i6out what God had in store for her. "The passion tHat I have is not just an interest, but something that God has given t~Me, " Kuhn said. "The more I have been seeking Him, and thejnore He has been working and changing me, the more I see who He first created me to be. Being Jesus' hands and feet is not something that I want to wait to be when I complete my major, it's something I want to start being in the right here of my life." Heidi Tabor
