"\\That was really great about it is that all the teachers were so high up in the field and they were also devoted Christians," Hammes said. Hammes discovered the camp while looking for graduate schools. It was three weeks long at the Oberlin College and Conservatory near Cleveland, Ohio. "It's a music co nservatory, much like J ulliard," Hammes said. " I didn't know what it was b efore this, which is embarrassing because it's something music p eople should know," The camp was deSigned for 13 to 23 -year-olds while keeping stu– d ents in their age brackets. But according to Hammes, it wasn't about competition or high pressure. It was mor e about growing talents while serving Cod. "There were a lot of 14 or IS-year olds who were b etter than I was," Hammes said. "I t was intimidating but really fun.·' "While sh e was there, she went to chapel, individual and group practice, individual coaching, coaching for her chamber group and fun act ivities like bowling and service projects. "Every week we did a service project in the community, and then we went and played in like a nursing home or park,·' Hammes said. " It was great because I didn't think that people would really care when we played but people were really appreciative. There was a little 2year-old boy in a park that just couldn't stop sta ring. It was cool." Upon graduation in May, Hammes planned to either go to grad– uate school to do cello perfor man ce or teach middle school o rches– tra and band. ""Whi tney is an outstanding cellist," Dr. Cliff Ganus, Professor of Music said. "She is a conscientious performer and student , one who demands the best of herself."
