The women of Shantih surround their beaux sophomore Landon Dover, junior Jesse Stacy and senior Jacob Spillman with their traditional “Beaux Song” after their Sept. 3 beach mixer. “The girls give me sense of pride and make me feel blessed; it’s an honor to serve them,” Dover said. [Chris Hamilton] Senior Danielle Stephens chats with twins freshman Courtney and sophomore Crysten Oliver at the Sept. 6 Iota Chi Jazzersize mixer. “We were joined at the hip at first but later grew more apart, so I’m glad Iota Chi is something we can always do together,” Crysten said. [Chris Hamilton] A plethora of Knights memorabilia, including chain mail and allsports trophies surround freshman Richard Metcalf at the men’s open house, held in the GAC Aug. 27. “Having 24 pounds of archaic armor just makes your duty to the crown a little more tangible,” said Knights member, junior Charles Brewer, collector and protector of medieval accessories. [Chris Hamilton] club week induction was a stressful time for new members. There were club week books to fill out, members’ names to know, mottos to memorize and tacky outfits to wear. However, some students were lucky enough to have a sibling go through the same experience simultaneously. And not just any sibling—the closest kind one could have—a twin. Senior Katie White spoke from experience. She and her twin sister Ali Winters, who graduated in spring 2007, joined Ko Jo Kai as freshman in 2003. “I could not have done [club] week without my sister,” White said. “There are plenty of times you strengthen your friendships with your new club sisters, but there is nothing that can replace a true sister.” Twins Mark and Will Ellis, both seniors, were another set of fraternal twins who joined the same club, Beta Omega Chi. Will was glad his brother Mark decided to join the club in 2005, a year after him. Will said he enjoyed being able to help his brother get to know other club members before and during club week. Mark, on the other hand, said having his brother in the club did not provide him with any special benefit, at least initially. “It’s been nice to have my brother, but to be quite honest, Will did not really influence my decision to join Beta Omega Chi,” Mark said. “I’m glad that it worked out the way it did though.” Seniors Jessica and Jennifer Merrill were another pair of twins who were active social club members. They joined Delta Gamma Rho in 2004. They said they did not set out to join together, but both found a home in their club. Jessica said they tried hard to separate themselves at school. They wanted people to get to know them as individuals, a difficult task for identical twins. However, in the end, both girls said they found strength in having a sister in the same club. The Brown twins Megan, a sophomore, and Mallory, a junior, were exceptions to the perceived rule. These fraternal twins joined different clubs, Ko Jo Kai and Ju Go Ju, respectively, as freshmen in 2005.They joined separate clubs so they could meet people on their own. “For so long, we have been known as the Brown twins,” Megan said. “For the first time we were known as individuals.” [Katie White and Kristin Kelley] twice as nice Twintrendin clubselection [ ] 258 [social clubs]
