Those overwhelming gifts of generosity helped the school reach those who had differenr learning abilities and ocher special needs. The American Marketing Association hosted two eveIHS specifi– cally meant to raise money for [he Sunshine School: Pizza Wars in the spring during basketball season and Barbecue Wa rs in the fall for football Season. Senior Man N iehoff, presidenc ofAMA, said there was no time to get behind in plan ning such a large event like the Barbecue Wars. "Much dme and planning had to go into an event like this," N iehoff said. '',M president 1oversaw all committees ro organize the evenr and all plans had ro be finalized by me." Anyone was able ro anend these evencs with a purchase of a $5 ticket. All who panicipated in Barbecue Wars were served an array of food provided by some of Searcy's restaurants. Chappell. 200 organizations Ai. well as raising money, the event served as a cookoffbecween the restaurants as the attendees voted for their favorite barbecue vendor. AMA members were put into comminees to organize the event. Senior Mary Beth Mo rtland, Web master for AMA, was head of the marketing comminee. "The main goal of my comminee was ro spread the word of [he upcoming evenc," Mortland said. "We made chapel announcements, puc up flyers around campus and even used Facebook to create an event so that no Harding affi liated person would be left our." With half of [he money being donated to the Sunshine School [he AMA used the rest of the money for a trip to Dallas that provided an opportunity for students to be exposed to the world of marketing as a career. "The trip helps marketing students get their foot in the door for an internship or the possibilities for a job down the road," Niehoff said.
