242 11 athletics " ·~!S CCESSi ~~ future collegiate competition Entering the spring portion of the golf season with seven underclassmen and only one senior, the golf team looked to develop fundamentals for future success. . The Bisons achieved success quickly when they placed first out of 10 teams at the Freed Hardeman Spring Invitational April 7-8, 2003, in Henderson, Tenn. The win marked the first tournament victory for a golf team in Harding's history. "The tournament win was quite the highlight of my year," coach Nicky Boyd sa.id. "1have not had such a big win in my time as the golf coach at Harding. 1was very excited and pleased with all of the guys on the team," At the FHU Spring Invitational, senior Aaron Farley finished first individually. Farley became the second golfer in Harding's history to cap– tUfe first place individually in a tournament. In the fall, the Bisons hoped to continue suc– cess on the green as they sported an entire new cast of team members, except returning sopho– more Adrian Morgan. "By adding some of our freshmen, I planne to win a lot of matches in the future by allow ing them to develop throughout their Hardin careers," Boyd said. "We are a young team wi t poten tial to grow." The team showcased its youthful abilitie during the fall as it placed fifth out of 11 team at the Christian Brothers University Invitationa Sept. 8-9 in Memphis, Tenn. At the FHU Fall Invitational Oct. 6-7 th Bisons tied for second place out of eight teams Freshman Drew Murphy, finishing in first plac individually, became the third golfer in Hard ing's history to win a tournament. Completing a solid year, the team remaine optimistic about the future success of the gol program at Harding. "I was so excited to come and play at a col legiate level," freshman Jay Paul Wade said "Now that I am playing at Harding, I a excited about what is in store for us in upcom ing seasons." - Emily San
