Harden started his motorcycle collection in 1969 with a 175 Kawasaki, but he didn't stop with just one. In the first years of his hobby, Harden purchased five bikes. He and a friend eventually opened up their own bike shop as a side job. Even though the shop only lasted four months Harden's love for motorcycles lasted much longer. He has been on several cross– country road trips since owning the shop. "I go on two major trips a year," Harnden said. "I have been coast to coast and border to border." While Harden admitted his hobby was dangerous, he said riding motorcycles was gratifying. "Ifs a completely different way to enjoy your surroundings. Just getting out by yourself-stress free." he said. "You can see, smell and experience things that you can't in a car." While enjoying the ride, it was a biker's duty to look the part. Although Harden admitted to owning the traditional black. leather jacket and chaps, he didn't always dress in the typical biker garb. "I wear a helmet more often than 1 don't," he said. "I do have a black leather jacket. I do have chaps, but I'm pretty conservative in my dress attire." A safer aspect of Harden's hobby was the restoration of bikes. Among his favorite to restore were the BMW motorcycles. Harden was a member of the BMW Motorcyclists of America and Harley Owners Group, the main Harley Davidson organization. - Sara Vorl Willkle
