(Photo by Jeff Montgomery) 130 II leadership Board ofTrustees appoints two female members Suzanne Waller, of Arlington, Texas, and Rebecca Tubb, of Sparta, Tenn., officially began their roles as Board of Trustees members at the fall board meeting Oct. 16-18. The board appointed Waller, a 1971 Harding graduate, and ,!;ubb, a 1970 Harding graduate, in May. "I was surprised to say the least," Waller said. "I didn't feel qualified, but I wanted to do it." Three board members have died since 2001, leaving open seats on the board. Board member Deanna Smith, and her husband, Gaylan, were traveling on their private plane Nov. 3, 2002, when it disappeared from radar as it prepared to land in Memphis. "I don't think you ever recover from losing someone who you're close to," Bill Chism, board vice chairman, said. "Deanna was a person who was very easy to get close to. She was a very likeable, easy-going person." Also, James H. Cone, board member for 30 yea rs, died in 2001 and Dr. Dan Russell, board member for 29 years, died in 2002. A committee of board member chose Waller and Tubb a candidates in the spring of 2003. The committee's sole purpos was to find qualified individual for the positions. "The purpose of that committe is to go out and find people wh are Harding advocates and peopl who would be true to our missio here," Chism said. Tubb, who majored in hom and family life and earned master's degree from Florid State University, works as homemaker. She has two child ren, Josep 18, and Daniel, 15. Waller, who earned a accounting degree and is certified public accountant, als works as a homemaker. "Having three chiidre graduate from Harding in rece years, I think I can give a mother' perspective on what it did for m children," Waller said. "I hop that same influence can be give to other students as they com through." - Renee Lew
