The team's final ranking of 21" in NCAA Division II proved that hard work pays off. TheLady Bisontermis teamdefinitelyboasted intel– ligence along with athletic ability. The team had a combined grade point average of 3.67 and each girl on the squad maintained a gradepoint average of at least 3.2. Coach David Elliot agreed there was a correlation between the girls' high grades and their detennination to play to the best of their abilities. Several of the women were recognized for their academic achievements. Junior Daniela Corrales and senior Eva Axelsson made the Verizon Academic All– District VI team. Seniors Pemilla Axelsson and Laura Toliett and Corrales each received Academic All-Con– ference recognition. The Lady Bison Tennis team completed the year with21winsand eight losses. Elliot attributed much of his team's success to the seniors. "Wehad real good leadership thisyear, our seniors really made a difference," Elliot said. Dedication was shownbyseveral team members. "The dedication shared by all of my teammates reallyencouragesme tocontinuetoworkhard," sopho– more Sara Campbell said. "We had four seniors last year,and theywereall greatleaders. The twins Evaand Penny Axelsson will be missed so much next season. They always encouraged all of us so much by the dedication they had themselves." Along with academic and athletic success, the team forrnedrelationshipswitheachotherthatwereremem– bered. "We were really great friends," jtmior Carolina Banuelos said. 'We were really close. We played as a team." The teamknew it would have big shoes to fill next season after the seniors left. 'Theyweregreatteammates. Wewill losea bigpart of us," Banuelos said. Theteama1sobelievedElliotcontributedagreatdeaJ to their success, Banuelos said. "Hewasa greatsupporterofus," she said. "During all ofour ups and downs, hewas always there trying to cheer us up." The2001-02Lady Bison tennis teamwas more than justagroupofgirlswhoknew how topJay termis.ltwas a team that knew how to be supportive.
