Jim Gowen, men's intramural director, said, "In intramurals we've had extensive participation. It's up over past years by about 20 percent. We've had a lot of people sign up." Jessica Moore, women's intramural director, echoed the growth in the women's program. "We had a lot more intramural volleyball teams than in the past," Moore said. "It fluctuates year to year, and this year has been a record number." The intramural department also saw some physical changes. "This year probably the biggest addition we've seen was putting grass on the infields of the softball fields," Gowen said. "The university has provided tremendous facilities; all of the facilities we have are fiveyears old or less. With the Ganus Athletic Center being converted to almost totally intramurals, it makes it a lot easier to run the program." By renovating the Ganus Athletic Center, the program was able to use the floor space more efficiently. "We were able to add two m o r e basketball goals, as well as two more volleyball courts," Gowen said. The women's intramurals began in the fall with softball, volleyball and tennis, and they took a break during the football season. In the spring season women's intramurals started off with basketball, soccer, softball, racquetball, badminton and table tennis. "The students are able to sign up for whatever they want to participate in," Moore said. "Youhavesomethatwilljustdo tennis because they're tennis players, and some that'll do all of the sports; it really varies." The men played similar sports in both the spring and the fall, adding flag football -'lii&u·• 11 ""' in the fall and swimming in the spring. "We also do the cross-country run, the football pass for distance and the softball throw for distance," Gowen said. "We've had very good sportsmanship and very few injuries; it's just been a great year." -Sarah Lair intramurals 273
