A friend calls with some urgent reason to get the targeted person out of their dorm. The innocent student staggers out the door, sleepy-eyed and confused. Then, just when he or she least expects it, a horde of members of the opposite sex descends and sings. One of Harding's timeless social clubtraditionshasstruckagain.Acommon occurrence at the end of each spring, queening and beauing ceremonies also took place occasionally throughout the year. Junior Jessica Long was queened by Delta Chi Delta in December. She was in her room studying after her social club's meeting when her boyfriend called to get her outside. "So, I was walking outside, talking to him," she said. "While I was walking along, a huge bunch of guys came running up screaming. I didn't know what to think. I was in shock, I guess. Then they all started singing to me, and I realized it was such an honor." In addition to attending club meetings, beaux and queens entertained and encouraged the members. "We give encouragement to all the girls whenever we see them," junior David Ockay, a Kappa Gamma Epsilon beau, said. "We live Christ-like lives because we are representing Christ first, and then Kappa Gamma." In wearing their new club's jersey, beaux and queens represented the club daily, especially during the induction process and at events such as the Beau Basketball Tournament and the Queen Football Tournament. Played during the visitation period of the induction process, the competitions served as a fundraiser as well as an opportunity to show club spirit. Delta Gamma Rho's beaux won the basketball tournament, while the Titans queens won the football contest. "It was neat for the girls to play a football game representing the boys' clubs," said senior Heather Fox, a Titans queen. "I think our playing surprised them-andmadethem proud." The event also promoted better relations between the clubs. "It was fun because we got to know other beaux while playing the sport we all love to play or watch," junior Aaron Snow, a Ko Jo Kai beau, said. queens & beaux 237
