As assistant, Cherry oversaw spring break campaigns and organized chapel programs. He also spoke to students, faculty, staff, board members and visitors on behalf of the president. Cherry considered it a privilege work in the president's office. "It's great working with Dr. Burks because I know what he is doing is good for this school and the people involved with Harding," Cherry said. Cherry gained experience in university administration and leadership skills. "Dr. Burks has impeccable integrity," Cherry said. "He is also the most consistent man on the face of the earth. It was very rewarding for me to be exposed to that." Cherry was a graduate student at the Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis working on his master's of divinity this year.
